Fetal treatment

While some disorders affecting unborn babies cannot be addressed until after birth, other defects can be addressed before a baby is born. The doctors at Novant Health Maternal-Fetal Medicine are highly skilled in a number of fetal treatments, including treatments for the following conditions:

Fetal anemia

Fetal anemia can be caused by Rh disease, a parvovirus infection or other antibodies present in the mother.

Polyhydramnios

Polyhydramnios is a condition involving excessive amniotic fluid and can be harmful to a developing baby.

Higher order multiple gestation

In some cases, having more than one baby can lead to the need for pre-birth interventions.

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) can occur in identical twins and higher order multiples who share a placenta. It happens when the blood vessels of the shared placenta are connected, resulting in one twin getting more blood flow and the other twin getting less blood than needed. Only a few specialized centers in the United States are successfully performing the latest interventions for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Your doctors will evaluate your pregnancy and determine if treatment is necessary for your twins. If treatment becomes necessary, they will assist you in locating the best referral center for your pregnancy and will work with the physicians at that site to follow your pregnancy and optimize your pregnancy outcome.
