Preparing for your ultrasound or procedure

In most cases, there is little you need to do to prepare for an ultrasound or procedure in our office, with a few exceptions.

First trimester ultrasounds

If you are having an ultrasound between 10 and 13 weeks gestation (called a first trimester screen, an NT measurement or sequential screen), a full bladder is needed.

CVS

A full bladder is ideal before a CVS. You will be able to drive home after the procedure. It is recommended that you avoid strenuous activity including exercise and repetitive heavy lifting (of more than 20 pounds) for three days following the CVS. It is still reasonable for mothers of young children weighing more than 20 lbs. to lift their children while avoiding overexertion. It is also recommended that you refrain from sexual intercourse or using tampons for one week following the CVS. There is generally no need to restrict automobile or air travel after an uncomplicated CVS.

If you are on low dose (also called prophylactic dose) of a blood thinner such as heparin or Lovenox, you can still have an amniocentesis, but it is best to hold your last dose before the procedure.

Amniocentesis

No special preparation is needed. You will be able to drive home after the procedure. It is recommended that you avoid strenuous activity including exercise and repetitive heavy lifting (of more than 20 pounds) for three days following the amniocentesis. It is still reasonable for mothers of young children weighing more than 20 lbs. to lift their children while avoiding overexertion. There is generally no need to restrict automobile or air travel after an uncomplicated amniocentesis.

If you are on low dose (also called prophylactic dose) of a blood thinner such as heparin or Lovenox, you can still have an amniocentesis, but it is best to hold your last dose before the procedure.
